Paranoid Castle - Champagne Nightmares (2011)

Escrito em 7 de Setembro de 2011 por Maestro

Photobucket

Bay Area emcee Kirby Dominant and Canadian producer Factor have both been at it for a decade plus, putting out consistent quality material on their respective fronts. In 2001, they found common ground, began recording together under the moniker Paranoid Castle and eventually released their
debut collaboration One Way Ticket on Side Road Records in 2004.
Kirby’s path to the fruits of the now was. By the age of 17 he had already been selling dope, locked up and shot. He was able to drastically shift gears and move forward at UC Berkeley, where he spent his financial aid checks on making an album. A string of successful releases on Rapitalism Records along with his Dominant Mammals collabo with Moka Only brought Kirby to the forefront of west coast indie rap and drew praise from the likes of URB Magazine and the San Francisco Guardian.
Factor has produced full-lengths for a who’s who of underground talent ranging from Awol One to Moka Only to Gregory Pepper in addition to his own lush, melodic solo endeavors. His larger-than-life palette incorporates bone-shattering drums spliced with meticulous samples and live instrumentation. From the virtual obscurity of Saskatoon to sought-after super-producer status, Factor’s travels have included working and touring alongside Kool Keith, Tha Liks, Sadat X, Aesop Rock and Buck 65.
2011 finds the duo of Kirby Dominant and Factor reunited as Paranoid Castle with their most focused collaboration to date. The years between the group’s releases gave them the opportunity to explore disparate musical avenues while still building chemistry as a crew with Kirby featuring on all of Factor’s solo projects. Champagne Nightmares, the duo’s debut on Fake Four, delicately careens between playful party anthems and introspective treatises on loss and being lost. While sections of the record find Kirby popping bottles and toasting to the good life, something in the way of Factor’s piercing aural brilliance brings out the vulnerable side of the NorCal rapper via bangers such as
“Orca” and “Some Place Else.”

Beatmakers RS 2011

K-the-I-Synesthesia-2011-

Escrito em 16 de Agosto de 2011 por Maestro

After the Cambridge, Mass., native rapper K-The-I??? immersed himself deep in the LA beat scene and spent innumerable months aloof abroad, he emerged an anomalous and innovative beat maker. Gleaning what he could from Thavius Beck, producer for his last Big Dada released album Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow, K-The-I??? has taken the Launchpad/Ableton style of beatmaking in his own direction. NME said about his last album, “Living within an architecture of alien sounds, K-The-I??? still could not be any more welcoming”. However, the architecture now his own - as well as the interior design, K-The-I??? is now truly in his own element. Synesthesia is K-The-I???’s first instrumental album and a testament to his growth as an artist.
Abandoning his discordant Mush era rap roots for a surprisingly melodic new sound, not the cookie cutter dubstep that one might expect a Dadaist rapper to employ, K-the-I??? uses the methods of production to do something no rapper has ever done. Drawing the same amount of inspiration from the ‘womp’ sound in current electronic movements as the airy MIDI themes of Super Nintendo RPGs, he creates a sound uniquely his own. At the same time both hard and elegant, dark yet ethereal. He has become a one man Godspeed You! Black Emperor for the post-Witchhouse age by layering glitchy rap influenced dance beats among harmonious vocal samples and lush synths. K-The-I??? calls in his allies Myka 9, sole and Ceschi to contibute to this post IDM masterpiece.

Dark Time Sunshine – Vessel 2010

Escrito em 5 de Agosto de 2011 por Maestro

Photobucket

For an emcee with an absurd number of aliases (Onry Ozzborn, Reason, Count Draven etc.), Michael Martinez seems to have found his true identity as Cape Cowen with Dark Time Sunshine. The dystopian malevolence of his earlier work with Grayskul and Oldominion has largely given way to witty and astute musings on the human condition via Vessel. His shift in approach is reminiscent of Cage’s reinvention of himself some five years ago. While a dark, nebulous undercurrent remains, rays of sunlight occasionally peak through the Venetians.

The sinister soundscapes of Zavala, the Chicago-based producer and other half of Dark Time Sunshine, propel Cape Cowen toward the most focused work of his burgeoning career. Zavalas’s sound is equal parts boom bap and psych-rock. The consistency of his beats provides the platform for a wide array of subject matter to develop without sacrificing continuity. A tongue-in-cheek Cape Cowen refers to the project as snob rap and places it somewhere on the continuum between MGMT and Outkast. He is at his storytelling best on “E.R.” and “Little Or No Concern,” the latter track a somber, heartfelt tale of inherited addiction. P.O.S. and Aesop Rock breathe fire over lo-fi funk on “Primor,” which epitomizes everything a posse cut should be. Vessel reaches its cinematic apex on the dense, uptempo “All Aboard,” with assistance from Reva Devito on the beautiful, swirling hook. No song better encapsulates Cowen’s artistic transformation.

Following the superb EP Believeyoume, which found Cowen handling all vocal duties, the abundance of guests on Vessel comes as a surprise. Fortunately the lion’s share of featured artists (e.g. Solillaquists of Sound, Qwel) carry their weight and complement Zavala’s production style quite well. Some of his more nefarious beats lend themselves to razor-sharp, abstract raps from Cowen which are every bit as engaging as the straight-forward concept pieces on the record. There are few dull moments on Vessel, one of the strongest hip hop albums of this young year indie or otherwise.

Fake Four has emerged as a formidable label with avante-garde releases over the past half-year from the likes of Dark Time Sunshine, Sole & The Skyrider Band and Ron Contour. Wildly talented lyricists and mind-bending beatsmiths are pushing the boundaries of indie rap while incorporating a vast arsenal of influences. With summer albums on the way from Ceschi and Factor, don’t expect the momentum to die anytime soon.

Legendary Music in conjunction with Lifted Research Group, present Luckyiam’s newest project, “I Love Haters“. The album is available for FREE download only for the month of August on L-R-G.com. The title of the album comes from Luckyiam’s view of the word, “hater”; he says, “You can’t critique anything anymore without being labeled a hater and I just don’t agree with that so, I Love Haters aka. people who have great taste, style and originality who aren’t afraid to express opinions”.

The album is produced entirely by Kruse who first worked with Luckyiam on his 2007 release of “Most Likely To Succeed”, during that process, Luckyiam realized that Kruse’s music conjured up the vibe of the earlier Living Legends’ sample heavy sound with an updated twist, and subsequently they decided to make an entire album together. The album also features guest spots from Slug of Atmosphere, Aceyalone of Freestyle Fellowship, Imani of Pharcyde, and Pep Love of Hieroglyphics.

“I Love Haters”, released on August 2, Luckyiam’s birthday, is Luckyiam’s way of thanking his listeners for the continued support throughout the years, be on the look out for some videos and another full length Luckyiam album titled, “Time 2 Get Lucky” in November. Follow Luckyiam on Twitter.
