Harmonic Emergency (Mush) is more than just an album title by Andre Afram Asmar, it is a call for action. If people think that the state of the world feels like everything will collapse, perhaps it is in dire need of harmony, and thus Asmar has put together an album that is that calling for some sense of harmony and togetherness.
Most of the music was recorded and mixed in the early 00?s, so this sense of Harmonic Emergency has been planned out for some time. What you’ll hear on the album is a mixture of samples, real instrumentation and some of those recordings chopped up and twisted into a journey I think all of us should take in our lifetime, one that involves exploring new places, music, people and their cultures. Asfar sounds like he’s just opening cultural doors and adding a bit of modern technology to it, so you’ll hear reggae, Middle Eastern and Asian sounds playing in a sonic playground that can only be done in our minds or in secret. Harmonic Emergency are the secrets revealed and witnessed, and oh what a sight and sound it is. I hate the term “world fusion” as it often leads to music, producers and arrangers trying to make their music a Disney-fied version of It’s A Small World. The world as we view it may not be nice but that comes through misunderstanding. Entering Asmar’s music world is coming in to understand, and passing the plate. If everyone is good, I’ll take seconds.

On Hello Cruel World, Sole aka Tim Holland returns with the Skyrider Band for his first full length since the split with Anticon, and his third album with the Skyrider Band. While much was made of Sole leaving the Anticon empire he helped create, there’s a refreshing, new found confidence and focus not seen since his now-classic albums Selling Live Water and Bottle of Humans. On Hello Cruel World sees Sole has assembled an army of the most exciting voices in indie culture to be apart of the new record, recruiting everyone from LILBTHEBASEDGOD, Xiu Xiu, Pictureplane, Sage Francis, Ceschi, and more, to create a pretty stunning tapestry that is a new high water mark in Sole’s creative output. The album drops July 19th on cd, vinyl, and digital via Fake Four Inc., with the European release being handled by Equinox Records.
Perhaps even more interesting, listeners will notice that Sole has adopted the most deliberate flow of his career–abandoning the freewheeling, hyper-timed assaults of his earlier work in favor of a biting clarity and all around accessibility. The record draws on the wealth of his newly found freedom, tapping into the positivity and ethics of a DIY tradition he has always known and embraced throughout his career - transforming his past cynicism into a call to arms and personal empowerment. The Skyrider Band itself has been similarly transformed; trading in their dense soundscapes and organic touchstones for an impeccable attention to detail and more studio-centric productions.
On Sole and the Skyrider Band’s last record, Plastique, Sole claimed, “I’ve been digging my grave since age 15.” Since then, he’s been hard at work converting his grave into trenches that span from California to Barcelona, and the bottom of the ocean to the moon. Hello Cruel World occupies these trenches, steadfastly refusing to be flushed into a niche.

Self-proclaimed rapgod Casual dropped his new LP via his bandcamp in one of those complicated new age arrangements where you can listen to it (below) but you have to pay for it to take it home. Except for five of the tracks, which technically you have to pay for but you can name your own price, so you could name like 1 penny. But the other nine–those you have to pay full price for. Personally, I would name a good price cause this is pretty tough. The beats by Toure (I think he produced all but one) are spare and built out of 90s-ish loops that evoke real emotion more than nostalgia. Caz, meanwhile has polished his flow since his young days but still has all the originality and off the wall humor of the Casual we remember.
