Rawls helped launch the independent Hip-Hop explosion of the late 90s by producing “Brown Skin Lady” and “Yo Yeah” from Mos Def and Talib Kweli’s seminal debut album as Black Star. He went on to anchor Lone Catalysts, one of the most acclaimed early independent rap groups, and release a successful solo album through Groove Attack in 2001. Now, more than a decade after his last solo Hip-Hop album, J Rawls is proud to present The Hip-Hop Affect. Rawls delved into neo-soul and jazz with The Essence Of Soul and The Liquid Crystal Project, but now he’s ready to make a full return to Hip-Hop. “We birthed it, created it, and reared it,” he explains. “We may not like every change, but we stick with Hip-Hop because we love it.”

Hail Mary Mallon (Aesop Rock + Rob Sonic + DJ Big Wiz) - ‘Are You Gonna Eat That?’ 2011

Escrito em 9 de Maio de 2011 por Maestro

After years of performing live together and appearing on each other’s solo albums, critically acclaimed mc’s/producers Aesop Rock and Rob Sonic, along with DJ Big Wiz, come together as Hail Mary Mallon and deliver their Rhymesayers debut Are You Gonna Eat That?. The name and album title are inspired by Mary Mallon aka Typhoid Mary, the first person in the U.S. identified as a healthy carrier of the pathogen associated with typhoid fever. Mary Mallon was presumed to have infected 53 people, three of whom died, over the course of her career as a cook. She spent three years in quarantine, which is where she died.

Are You Gonna Eat That? is full of powerful dense production and witty word play courtesy of Aesop Rock and Rob Sonic. Add some turntable wizardry from DJ Big Wiz and this trio is destined to be as infectious as Typhoid Mary herself.

Hip-Hop legend Edo. G has nothing left to prove. With his pair of debut singles “I Gotta Have It” and “Be a Father to Your Child” in 1991, Edo introduced himself to the world as a unique MC, one able to deliver both sharp social commentary and reality-based raps with slick rhymes and wit to spare. Having collaborated with legends like DJ Premier, Pete Rock and Masta Ace over a two-decade career, his legacy in the game is undisputed. But on A Face in the Crowd, Edo returns to mark the 20-year anniversary of his first album with a hunger to bring real hip-hop back to the forefront. Led by the single “Like That,”* featuring his Boston-based Special Teamz crew of Jaysaun (Kreators) and Slaine (La Coka Nostra), the album features guest appearances from Bishop Lamont, Chali 2Na, and M1 (dead prez), with production from DJ Premier, Statik Selektah, Explizit One, M Phases, The Breaks, Young Cee and others. After building a universally respected reputation in hip-hop, A Face in the Crowd is a fitting way to crown a 20-year career that still has many chapters left to write.
