Finally! The re-issues of two groundbreaking EP’s from Bored Stiff are now available on CD! When members of crews like Hieroglyphics, Project Blowed and the Living Legends were helping to put the West Coast underground hip hop scene on the map, Bored Stiff was right there and have remained friends and frequent collaborator’s with aforementioned groups for years. Originally released on cassette and now high commodity collector’s items, it is interesting to think that the titles are still so significant. So, for those who have been waiting to replace that old over-played dusty tape, you can finally rejoice, or you can rub it in to those of us who no longer own the originals… Also available again, Ghetto Research from back in 2001! Release Notes:

Philadelphia based producer Haj of Dumhi continues his
string of impressive indie releases with “The Jungle”. Using
Ethiopian jazz samples as the foundation, Haj has created a
bed of layered drums and horn driven beats as the basis for
the project. Also utilizing voice snippets from a wide array
of sound sources, he develops metaphors between survival in
the actual jungle with the challenges that face many inner
city youths today. The Jungle is anchored by legendary
Philadelphia emcee Reef the Lost Cauze, who appears on four
of the albums eleven tracks. Reef and Haj first worked
together on the 2008 Dumhi release “Yoga at Home” and have
developed an undeniable chemistry over the course of several
collaborations since. The album also features up and coming
indie emcees such as Philadelphia’s Random, Ethel Cee, and
Burke the Jurke as well as NY emcees Che Grand and Elucid among others.

The Roots - How I Got Over (v0) 2010

Escrito em 19 de Junho de 2010 por Maestro

To call it “long-awaited” or “eagerly anticipated” would be the understatement of the year - as hip-hop’s most daring pioneers the Roots release their 9th studio album (and third for Def Jam Recordings), HOW I GOT OVER. The album, which takes its name from Clara Ward’s gospel classic (made popular by Mahalia Jackson), is the Roots’ first new release since joining Late Night with Jimmy Fallon for a full time gig as the show’s house band.

Grammy Award winners the Roots characterize the songs on HOW I GOT OVER as “depicting the everyman’s search for hope in this dispiriting post-hope zeitgeist”.

The lead single from the Roots new set will be “Dear God 2.0.” The track re-imagines the Monsters Of Folk song “Dear God” and features MOF members Yim Yames from My Morning Jacket, Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis from Bright Eyes and M. Ward.

HOW I GOT OVER also includes two appearances from Grammy-winning soul man John Legend: “Doin’ It Again” a re-working of his track “Again,” and “The Fire,” an original song written for the Roots’ 2010 Olympic concert performance.

The Roots and Legend have developed a strong musical bond, as the group has produced John’s entire upcoming release Wake Up, which shares the socially conscious themes of the “How I Got Over” set and is comprised of late sixties/early seventies covers.

Other guests on HIGO include Joanna Newsom on “Right On,” Phonte Coleman (Little Brother, The Foreign Exchange), Blu (Blu & Exile), Peedi Peedi , Mercedes Martinez, Icelandic alt-pop singer Patty Crash, newcomer Sugar Tongue Slim as well as long time Roots’ Crew members Dice Raw, Truck North and P.O.R.N.

MF_Grimm-You_Only_Live_Twice-2010

After a four-year hiatus, Percy Carey, aka MF Grimm, returns to music with his eighth studio album You Only Live Twice: The Audio Graphic Novel, set for release on June 8th, 2010. Grimm’s reemergence sees the veteran New York rapper moving into a new phase in his career as an artist, one that has seen him venture into the realm of comic books and journalism (Complex Magazine, Splashdown). For the past three years, Grimm has gone from rapper to respected author thanks to the success of his Eisner-nominated, Glyph Award winning autobiographical graphic novel Sentences: The Life of MF Grimm.

Admittedly, Grimm’s experience in the comic book industry helped him find the new creative voice he brings to Twice. The album features a engaging blend of powerful production (provided by Twiz the Beat Pro) intelligent lyrics, well-crafted story, and, of course, edgy artwork provided by Jim Mahfood a.k.a. Food One (Spider-Man and Kevin Smith’s Clerks), who illustrates the album’s accompanying 16-page comic book. After establishing himself as a lasting presence in underground Hip Hop over the past decade, MF Grimm looks ahead to the next 10 years with hunger and creativity on You Only Live Twice.
