After trailblazing around the globe numerous times with Gang Starr as a core member of the Gang Starr Foundation, Big Shug, who has appeared on Gang Starr’s classics such as 1994’s Hard To Earn “F.A.L.A.,” 1998’s Moment Of Truth “The Militia” and 2003’s Gold-certified The Ownerz “Capture” (Militia Pt.3), follow’s up his 2007 sophomore LP, Streetchamp, with his latest street savvy endeavor Otherside Of The Game.

Staying true to the Gang Starr Foundation formula, Big Shug recreates his indelible bond with DJ Premier on Otherside Of The Game, as DJ Premier chips in with four tracks, including the street-bangers “”My Boston” feat. Termanology and Singapore Kane and “Like A Muhfucka.” Shug also recreates his chemistry with MoSS (AZ, Joell Ortiz, Sean Price, Ghostface, Joe Budden) on five tracks including the standout “Murdapan.” Otherside Of The Game also features guest appearances from Billy Danze of M.O.P., Termanology, Bumpy Knuckles (AKA Freddie Foxxx), Blaq Poet and Singapore Kane. Be sure to also check out Big Shug as he holds down co-hosting duties on DJ Premier’s Sirius Satellite Radio show “Live From HeadQCourterz” every Friday night from midnight-2AM.

Statik_Selektah-Stick_2_The_Script-2008-

It’s been a year since DJ Statik Selektah made sure the world “spelled his name right” and now he’s back with his sophomore album, appropriately entitled Stick 2 The Script. As always, Statik steers away from the over-fabricated, ring-tone production that is popular today and backed by a who’s who of street-credible, time-tested emcees, comes correct. Mixtapes and mixshow radio programs from NYC to LA are already playing the lead single, “To The Top,” which features Cassidy, Saigon and Termanology. Rik Cordero hopped on board to direct the Reservoir Dog-inspired music video which has already received over 100,000 views. Cordero himself has been featured in Hip Hop Connection, Rolling Stone, Vibe, XXL, ect. and has directed videos for major commercial artists including Jay-Z, Nas, and Snoop Dogg. Other stand out tracks include “For the City” which is a New Jack City-inspired song featuring M.O.P. and Jadakiss and finds Statik utilizing a cappella tracks of soulful chanting to create this New York City classic.

Stick 2 The Script encapsulates Statik’s East Coast boom-bap production and brings this sound to the South on “Get Out The Way” which features Bun B and UGK-alumnus Cory Mo and to the West Coast on the lowrider anthem “Cali Nights” with appearances by Glasses Malone, Mistah Fab, and Novel. “All 2gether Now” is a powerful reunion of State Property’s Freeway, Peedi Crakk, and Young Chris and Consequence gets it on solo with the Kanye West co-signed “Mr. Popularity” which is currently making the rounds online and on mixtapes.

With King Magazine hailing it as “soul sampling boom bap of the highest caliber,” the album will undoubtedly be hailed as as a savior of true Hip Hop. With Statik’s signature sound, DJ Premier-inspired scratch hooks, and support from big name guests, fans will gladly be “sticking to the scipt.”

Diamond_D-The_Huge_Hefner_Chronicles-2008-

Veteran emcee, producer and member of legendary New York MC clique, D.I.T.C., Diamond D has contributed his trademark style to some of the most iconic records in hip-hop including The Fugees’ “The Score,” and A Tribe Called Quest’s “The Low End Theory” and many more. In 1992, he recorded his first solo album, the underground classic, “Stunts, Blunts & Hip-Hop” (which was released under the moniker: “Diamond + The Pyschotic Neurotics”) which shifted upwards of 105,000 units. Following this debut effort, Diamond D. lent his production skills to such mid-late 90’s A-list independent talent as: Mos Def, the Fugees, A Tribe Called Quest, Xzibit, Pharoahe Monch, KRS-One, House of Pain, the Pharcyde, Sadat X (of Brand Nubian) & many more. His second solo offering, 1997’s “Hatred, Passions & Infidelity,” featured appearances from such A-list luminaries as Busta Rhymes, Phife Dawg and Pete Rock and moved 30,000+ units. Amongst great anticipation, Diamond D returns with “The Hugh Hefner Chronicles” a rare and coveted glimpse into the life of an industry veteran, with a little help from Sadat X and production by Nottz and more.

The_Mighty_Underdogs-Droppin_Science_Fiction-2008

Photobucket
What’s the point of keeping it real when alternate realities are so much more fun? For new hip-hop super-group, The Mighty Underdogs, our world is one of hyper-reality where vacationing monsters have gunfights. Nothing’s harder than that, man.

The newly formed trio of hip-hop heavy weights from the West Coast—Blackalicious’s Gift of Gab, fellow Quannum compatriot Lateef the Truth Speaker and Bay Area producer Headnodic—release their debut collaboration, Dropping Science Fiction, on the other coast’s Definitive Jux.

Backed by a dizzying set of collaborators that include DJ Shadow, Mr. Lif, Akrobatik, The Alkoholiks’ Tash, Jurassic 5’s Chali 2na, Julian and Damian “JR Gong” Marley, The Mighty Underdogs tour through worlds and soundscapes that blur all settings. Album opener “Monster” is comic book evilness that powers up on a secret solution of mind-numbing lyricism at breakneck speed. The MF Doom-assisted “Gun Fight” is a wild west romp where Gift of Gab goes out in a blaze of revenge-fueled glory over the most rappified twang since Bubba Sparxxx’s Deliverance. Even the interlude, aptly dubbed “Doglude,” is an exercise in a cappella beat building that shows Headnodic—despite being the least known member of the trio—belongs in this hallowed company.

The Might Underdog pedigree is one bred for serious heads. Throughout Blackalicious’s 10-year run as indie rap elite, Gift of Gab has found himself atop numerous Top 10 lists. Whether it’s solo action or paired with Lyrics Born as Latryx, Lateef the Truth Speaker is a linguist gymnast of the truly impassioned variety. Lateef’s got big game experience, too, as his collaboration with Fat Boy Slim, “Wonderful Night” scored a Grammy nomination. Headnodic, an accomplished bass player and part of the forever heralded and endlessly funky Crown City Rockers, is ready for a busy 2008, as his musical partnership with Moe Pope looks to gain more than a few nods from the real hip-hop heads, in addition to his Mighty Underdog work. On Dropping Science, his productions run the gamut from anime-in-space laser fights to Timbaland-channeling sample sources and trunk-rattling bass.

So how did three loosely related but certainly solo minded artists come together for a piece of superhero super stories? While going through tracks from Headnodic for his solo album, Lateef found enough desperately desirable tracks to make an entire album. Since Lateef and Gab had been talking about their own collaborative project for longer than Souljah Boy’s been alive it just made good boom-bap sense.

With the three artists exhausted by hip-hop’s penchant for taking itself too damn seriously, they broke rules like rules were going out of style and allowed songs to be everything from violent to, gasp, silly. Completing the convergence of powers is Definitive Jux head honcho El-P. Having toured the indie rap circuit with Gab and Lateef for more than a decade, it’s a surprise that the three haven’t combined forces before. Call it par for the course, because with the Mighty Underdogs, one can only expect the unexpected.

The Foreign Exchange
Photobucket
Four years after the release of their critically acclaimed debut “Connected,” The Foreign Exchange returns with their sophomore set, “Leave It All Behind.”

Consisting of singer/songwriter Phonte and producer Nicolay, The Foreign Exchange came together via the online hip-hop community Okayplayer.com in 2002. After trading files through Instant Messenger for over a year, Nicolay (living in his native Holland at the time) and Phonte (a Raleigh, NC resident) completed their debut album before they ever met each other in person. The album, “Connected,” was released in 2004 to positive reviews, and was praised by legendary DJ’s such as Jazzy Jeff, King Britt, and DJ Spinna for its inventive mix of hip-hop, R&B, and electronica.

“Leave It All Behind” finds The Foreign Exchange much closer in geography (Nicolay has since become a resident of Wilmington, NC), but located much further from their hip-hop origins. The duo’s second full-length is a dark, multilayered affair that features Phonte showcasing his abilities as an exceptional lead and harmony vocalist, while Nicolay extends his musical palette to include sprinklings of jazz, downtempo, and house. The lush, Darien Brockington-assisted “Take Off the Blues” picks up where Connected’s sleeper hit “Come Around” left off, while the complex polyrhythms and dreamy synthesizers of “Sweeter Than You” are described by Phonte as “swing jazz for the next century.” Marc Mac (of legendary UK production team 4hero), also contributes a string arrangement to the duo’s glorious cover of Stevie Wonder’s oft-forgotten 1991 gem, “If She Breaks Your Heart.”

In addition to appearances from longtime FE affiliates Darien Brockington and Yahzarah, the album also features guest shots from producer/keyboardist Zo! and vocalist Muhsinah.

The Primeridian are back with their new album Da Mornin Afta, produced exclusively by beat-maker from the UK & Europe. Giving this album a different vibe from their previous works. They still showcase their soulful and smooth vibe with songs like Take You There featuring Imani from The Pharcyde and Melodic Healing featuring the soulful vocals of Yaw who recently graced the cover of Straight No Chaser. However on Da Mornin Afta they show an edgier side with cuts like Hang On produced by world renown Nicolay for the Netherlands and High Noon Stank produced by Willow from the UK. Others featured on Da Mornin Afta are J-Rose from Norway, DJ Steady from France, and Knowledge from Kids in the Hall. To add vocal variety Simeon and Tree have added a third mc to fold Race. Some tracks feature all 3 mc’s others just feature 2 of the 3 mc’s. For followers of The Primeridian they won’t be disappointed in Da Mornin Afta, as they stay close to their roots keeping the music soulful and creative.

East_Coast_Avengers-Prison_Planet-2008-

The children of Reaganomics are all grown up now. Having survived two violent Bush regimes, those raised in the 80’s and molded in the 90’s are now strong enough and wise enough to revolt against the wicked oppressors on this Prison Planet. These children, who grew up lower middle class on the teachings of Marvel Comics as opposed to the New York Post, who have more faith in George Lucas’ Force than they do the Holy Bible, are poised to strike. What brought them to this point? Could it be the broken homes? Faulty clinical evaluations? Is it the prescription medications or the illegal drugs, which have become one in the same? Or maybe it’s the influence of Public Enemy, Paris, and the Dead Kennedys? Most likely it’s a combination of them all, mixed with a splash of American counter-culture by way of the Black Panthers, David Icke, and Abbie Hoffman. Emerging from this equation are two unforgiving lyricists who paint storyboards so vivid that the imagery rivals scenes from a Francis Ford Coppola screenplay. Stirring this pot is one producer with sonic landscapes plush enough to create the soundtrack to those images. Mix in current America, The Middle East, the war on terror, fear, paranoia, the war for oil, oppression, homelessness, depression, mind control, chemical warfare, sky rocketing taxes and global warming and what do you get? The Prison Planet that we are all serving life on. The Prison Planet where our only hope is The East Coast Avengers. Esoteric (of 7L & Esoteric, Army of the Pharaohs), trademarc, and DC the MIDI Alien combine as the East Coast Avengers, a trio of Hip Hop rebels who have answered the call and take aim at Bill O’Reilly and the religious Right. If you haven’t witnessed the frenzied media fall out and myspace censorship from ECA’s singles “Kill Bill O’Reilly” (original version and music video are included here) and “Dear Michelle (Malkin)” do yourself and your country a favor and get on it… let no evil-doing pundit, talk show host, or politician be safe in America any longer. Prison Planet drops October 7th on Brick Records. The whole world is watching.
